John Fante - Toza Sor - Ask the Dust

Fante uzun zamandır okumak istediğim ama hep ertelediğim bir yazar. Okumaya karar verdiğimde ise en ünlü eseri Toza Sor ile başlamayı tercih ettim.

Eser, tıpkı Martin Eden gibi yazabilme ve iyi bir yazar olabilme sürecini işliyor. Hatta, burada da bir aşk hikayesi mevcut. Fakat, Martin Eden'dan sonra bu romandaki felsefi boyutlara ulaşan sorgulamalar benim için daha hafif gibi kaldı.Aşkla ilgili anlatıların da fazlaca yer alması çok sevdiğim bir şey değil.

Şu bir gerçek ki otobiyografik öğeler taşıyan bu eseri okuyunca Fante'nin kesinlikle kendine has ve ilgi çekici bir yazın tarzı olduğuna şahit oluyorsunuz. İnanca, aşka ve hayata dair pek çok analiz ünlü başkahraman Arturo Bandini bakış açısından bazen ironik bazen de hicivsel olarak özgün bir tarzla dile getiriliyor. Los Angeles Bunker Hill'in tozları Bandini'nin arayış sürecinde adeta sizin de boğazınızı tıkıyor. 

Bukowski'nin Fante'yi "Tanrı"sı ilan ettiği bu eser kesinlikle okunmaya değer. Benim "en"lerime girmedi, fakat Fante ile ilgili duyduğum övgüleri anlamamı sağladı en azından. Romanda en sevdiğim cümleyle size hoşçakalın diyorum. İnançlı olun olmayın çok etkili bile cümle olduğu inkar edilemez.

I have been willing to read a work by Fante and his most well known work, Ask the Dust, has been my first choice. 

As in Martin Eden, the work deals with the process of being a good writer. It also has a love story like Martin Eden. Yet, compared to Martin Eden, the philosophical inquisitions seemed milder to me. I do not like writings about love, either.

It is a fact that once reading this semi- autobiographical work, you realize that Fante certainly has a peculiar and engaging style. Many analyses about faith, love and life itself are depicted ironically and sarcastically through the famous protagonist Arturo Bandini's narration. During Bandini's search, the dust of Bunker Hill, Los Angeles chokes you, too.

The novel is worth reading, for which Bukowski called Fante his God. It has not been one of my "best", but I could get the hype about Fante. I say goodbye with the sentence I loved most in the novel. Whether you have faith or not, one cannot deny that it is a powerful sentence.
