Martin Eden is a novel for which I take a deep breath even mentioning it.

When I was just an-18-year old student, it has shown me that many things could change by simply reading and researching, 

When I was just an-18-year old student, despite witnessing that many things can change, it showed me how some situations can still be against you.

It's a novel which shows that the character is independant of materiality and many so-called values.

It's a novel which shows that ignorance causes bliss, yet knowing leads to a series of incidences of intolerantness.

It's a novel where I could scrutinize a human being who has given up on life...

It's a novel which tells about a person,who is well aware of everything and cannot put up with it... 

It's a novel which has artistically been one of my crossroads.

Bir Don Juan'ın Bildungsroman Tasviri

Herkese merhaba, 

Bugünkü yazım okurken zaman zaman eğlendiğim zaman zaman düşündüğüm çoğu zaman da şaşırdığım bir roman olan G. üzerine...

John Berger Görme Biçimleri ile birçok kişinin zevkine hitap etmiştir. Bu roman ise okuduğum ilk kurgusal eseri. Romanda sevdiğim çok şey var: Kurgusu, hikayesi, olay örgüsü, üslubu ve anlatısı gibi. 

Hikaye gerçekten çok ilgi çekici. Berger, bir erkeğin, daha dünyaya gelmeden önceki aile şartlarından başlar ve hayatının çeşitli dönemlerini hikaye içine örer. Başlıkta bildungsroman etiketlemesini yapmamın nedeni de bu. Olay örgüsünün gelişmesi sırasında İtalya'nın siyasi tarihinden tutun da sosyal hayatına, ekonomik analizlerden cinselliğin en ince ayrıntılarına (kapaktan da anlaşılacağı üzere) kadar pek çok konuda teorik ve pratik bilgiler verir.

Romanın en güzel tarafı ise yazarın olay örgüsüne aralar vererek okuyucuyla doğrudan bir iletişime geçmesidir. Bu esnada yazar olayları anlatma şeklini ve nedenini açık etmenin yanı sıra, anlattığı olayların teorik bilgisini de adeta bir ders şeklinde okuyucuya iletir. Hikaye daha sonra kaldığı yerden devam eder. 

Üstkurgunun hatta yer yer tarihi kurgunun büyük yer kapladığı ve yazarın müdahaleleriyle parça parça hissi veren eser bu anlamda çok güzel bir postmodernizm örneğidir. Hatta yazılma tarzı olarak bana bu dönemin en güzel örneklerinden biri olan Fransız Teğmen'in Kadını'nı (John Fowles, 1969) hatırlattı (Bu esere hayranlıktan öte duygular beslerim).

Hem edebi anlatımı yüksek hem de ilginç bir hikaye okumak isteyenlere tavsiye edilir...

G.- Bildungsroman Depiction of a Don Juan

Today's post is on G. While reading, I sometimes had fun, sometimes thought a lot, sometimes got shocked.

John Berger, appealed to many with his Ways of Seeing. This is the first fictional work of his that I have read. There're lots of things I love about it. Like the story, the plot, the style and the narration.

The story is really absorbing. Berger begins with the domestic conditions of a boy before his birth and sews his life periods into the story. That's why I used the bildungsroman etiquette for the title. Through the development of the story, Berger gives theoretical and practical information about many topics such as Italy's political history, social life, economic and sexual (which is obvious on the cover) analyses.

The best part of the novel is that Berger pauses the story and directly communicates with the reader. Meantime, besides giving away his narration style and the reasons of the incidents, Berger gives a kind of lecture to the reader. Then, the story continues.

The work, in which metafiction and also historical fiction take a lot of space, gives a sense of fragmented narration. Thus, it is a great example of postmodernism. It even reminded me of French Lieutenant's Woman (John Fowles, 1969). which is a good example of the period (I feel more than admiration for it).

I suggest it to everyone who fancies reading a novel both with an interesting story and a high literary technique.

Swastika Geceleri - Nazi Distopyası /// Swastika Night - Nazism Dystopia

Herkese Merhaba,

Bugünkü yazım varlığını geç keşfettiğim için utandığım Swastika Geceleri üzerine... Korkudan Murray Constantine mahlasında yayınladığı eser Burdekin'in en bilinen eseri olma özelliğini taşımaktadır. Buna rağmen, daha Hitler hayattayken yazdığı bu roman için Burdekin'in cesaretine hayran kaldığımı da belirtmek isterim.

Distopya, benim gibi pek çok okurun fazlaca sevdiği bir tür. Bu türü bu kadar sevmeme rağmen bu eseri neden duymadım diye bir düşündüm. Zira, roman diğer türdeşlerine göre daha az biliniyor. Romanı okuyunca nedenini tahmin ettim diyebilirim.

Hikaye, Hitler öldükten 700 yıl sonrasına ışık tutuyor. Bu dünyada, Hitler tanrılaştırılmıştır. Oldukça korkunç bir portre çizen eser gerçekten insanı ürkütüyor. Fakat bu konunun üzerinden işlenen olayın örgüsü beni çok cezbetmedi. Ayrıca 1984, Damızlık Kızın Öyküsü ya da Cesur Yeni Dünya gibi eserlerde hissettiğim anlatıya burada çok şahit olamadım.

Özetle, çok yaratıcı bir hikaye ve yaklaşım var eserde. Fakat, olay örgüsü ve anlatım benim sarsmadı. Tabi ki, bu kişisel bir tercihtir. Yine de, öyle bir toplumda özellikle kadına, dine ve sosyal hayata bakış açısı nasıl olurdu diye merak edip bir şans verecekseniz çok karanlık bir dünyaya hazır olun.

Today's post is on Swastika Night, for which I feel ashamed that I discovered too late. Being afraid, Burdekin published it under the pseudonym  of Murray Constatine and it still is the most known work of hers. Despite that, I want to note that I applaud the courage of Burdekin who wrote the novel while Hitler was still alive.

Dystopia is a genre that is admired by many readers, just like me. I gave it some thought on why I hadn't heard this novel before despite adoring the genre so much. After I have read the novel, I guess I know the reason why.

The story spotlights the time 700 after Hitler's era. In this world, Hitler is deified and worshipped as God. The novel which reveals a very dark protrait startles you. Yet, the plot hasn't appealed to me much. Moreover, I haven't witnessed a satisfying narration of the novels like 1984, A Handmaid's Tale and Brave New World.  

In short, there is a creative story and approach for this novel. Yet, the plot and telling haven't shattered me. Certainly, this is a personal preference. Nevertheless, if you want to - and you should- give a chance to this work wondering how would be the perspective towards women, religion and social life in that society, be prepared for a dark world!
